What are the characteristics of a diamond?

The diamond is the precious stone par excellence in jewelry: that is why today, we explain everything you need to know about what the characteristics of a diamond are. At WESSELTON, we are dedicated to offering jewelry and diamonds that are dazzling and long-lasting, capable of encapsulating lifelong memories. We achieve this by combining the art of jewelry with our extensive diamond experience.

The perfection of a diamond reminds us that, even under the highest pressure, beauty can emerge in captivating ways. Something that characterizes the diamond is the possibility of determining its quality according to established standards and nomenclatures, which allows speaking a common, easily understandable “language.” These characteristics are known as the 4Cs.

Characteristics of a diamond: The 4Cs

The 4Cs are a grading system used to evaluate the quality of diamonds. This system is adopted by all jewelry professionals around the world, helping to find the perfect jewelry.

Size (Cut)

The beauty of a diamond lies in its complex relationship with light, resulting in three attributes to value: brilliance (the combination of white light that is reflected on the surface and within the diamond), fire (the “flames” of color that the diamond emits) and glare (the light given off when the diamond, light, or observer moves). The proportions and cut of a polished diamond affect its behavior in light, an aspect that the GIA rates from Excellent to Poor.

Weight in Carat (Carat)

The carat is the unit of weight used to measure diamonds, and each carat is equal to 200 milligrams. In the case of diamonds less than one carat, each carat is divided into 100 points to equally value their weight.

Color (Color)

The color of a diamond is determined by comparing each one to a predetermined standard. The GIA color scale ranges from D (no color) to Z (light yellow or brown). Each letter represents a color range and its degree of visibility.

Purity (Clarity)

The purity of a diamond is evaluated based on the internal and external characteristics of the diamond, resulting from its formation under conditions of extreme heat and pressure. The GIA purity scale includes eleven grades, which help determine the quality and purity of the diamond.

The Fifth C: Certificate

An often forgotten, but equally important, feature is the Certificate. It is crucial that the four value characteristics above are established by a serious and impartial certification laboratory. At WESSELTON, we work only with the best gems and diamonds, all selected by our certified gemologist. Diamonds over 0.30 ct are certified by the GIA, guaranteeing the best quality standards in an objective and impartial manner.

Commitment to Quality

Our commitment to quality goes beyond seeking the best of a diamond’s main characteristics. All our diamonds also have the Kimberley certificate of origin, a process established by the UN that guarantees that diamonds come from conflict-free zones. This commitment ensures that every diamond we offer is not only beautiful and durable, but also ethical.

At WESSELTON we understand that each diamond is more than just a gem; It is an investment in memory and love that will last for generations. We invite you to explore our collection and discover the perfect piece of jewelry that encapsulates your most precious moments.
